DIY Blanket Stitched Napkins

DIY Blank Stitched Napkins | Sarah Hearts for The Flair Exchange

I just love cloth napkins and how they can instantly transform any table. They add the feeling of being in a nice restaurant and they are eco-friendly. The only thing that I’m not a fan of is the big price tag that’s usually attached to them. I eye the ones at Anthropologie and West Elm and wait to find them on sale because I think $10 (and up!) for one napkin is way too much to spend.

I’m always on the look out for napkins with interesting details like embroidery. I decided to try my hand at adding some contrasting stitching to a set of plain gray napkins I had recently purchased. You don’t need to be a seamstress to tackle this project. Just follow the steps below for this fun weekend project. Your next dinner guests will think you purchased them! They also make lovely hostess gifts!

  • Cloth napkins (you can find a ton of colors here)
  • Embroidery floss (about 6 yards for each 20″ square napkin)
  • Needle
  • Scissors

2. Cut a piece about 3 yards long and tie a knot towards the end. Thread the needle on the other end. Start sewing at one corner of the napkin and bring the needle up from the back.

3. Pull the string taught.

4. Bring the needle though the back to the front, placing it in the same spot as the first stitch. Pull tight.

5. Bring the needle though the front top layer of the napkin, close to the edge. Pull tight.

6. Bring the needle from the back to the front, about half inch away from the first stitch.

7. As you pull the previous stitch tight, place the needle though the loop, then pull the stitch taught.

8. Repeat steps 6-7 creating stitches all along the edges of the napkin. You will need to add more thread half way though. Simply tie another knot at the end of the new piece of thread and begin the same way you started the first stitch (step 2).
